Ottawa, August 29, 2024—Starting April 1, 2025, expired Refugee Protection Claimant Documents (RPCDs) will no longer be accepted.
Asylum claimants can renew an expired RPCD or replace one that is lost, destroyed, or stolen by using the web form provided by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). For detailed instructions on how to complete the web form, visit the “Replace your refugee protection claimant document” page.
Please note that old paper application forms sent by mail to IRCC will no longer be processed and will be returned to the sender. Information about alternative options for those needing accommodations will be available on the RPCD replacement page in the coming weeks.
Once processed, renewed RPCDs will be sent by mail, or claimants may need to pick them up at a local IRCC office.
An RPCD is an important Canadian photo ID given to asylum claimants whose claims have been accepted and referred to the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. It is also issued to ineligible claimants who may apply for a pre-removal risk assessment. Asylum claimants use their RPCD (or acknowledgment of claim letter) to access the Interim Federal Health Program and other services in Canada.
